In the 1980s a number of fans commented that the series was not as good as it used to be. The then producer, John Nathan-Turner remarked that "memory cheats", suggesting that perhaps some views were clouded by nostalgia. I was not one of those fans, I liked stories from various eras - at that time the 70s and the 80s. Later I would find equal enjoyment of the 60s stories. Only one story ever fell under the category of "memory cheats" - The Ark in Space. The first episode is excellent and the premise is very good. Unfortunately the story never really develops the promise of that first episode. The notion of insect creatures crossing the vast gulfs of space is utterly preposterous and nothing in the story makes me want to suspend disbelief sufficiently enough. There are other moment which are simply melodramatic and simply do not compare with other, more polished Robert Holmes stories.
For many fans The Ark in Space is a timeless classic, for me its an enjoyable story that starts on a high and then slowly goes downhill, although I would concede that it doesn't go all the way down. A good story to watch but not the classic its made out to be.
