The 7th Doctor is honouring the request of his arch-enemy, The Master, to return his remains to their home planet of Gallifrey. Although he had been executed by the Daleks, the Master is not quite dead and his essence escapes from its casket and attacks the TARDIS console, forcing the Doctor to make an emergency landing.
Chang Lee and two friends take a walk through the back streets of San Francisco only to encounter a street gang. His two friend are killed in the ensuing gunfight and Lee takes cover. Just as it seems that he too will die in a hail of bullets a strange blue box materialises in between him and the gang. The Doctor emerges and is shot; the gang make their getaway leaving Chang Lee to look after the fallen Doctor. Injured, the Doctor tries to warn Lee about the Master's essence as its emerges from the TARDIS.
The Doctor is taken to a hospital to have his injuries treated but the operation seems to fail and he apparently dies on the operating table. The surgeon, Grace Holloway, examines the Doctor's x-ray and sees that his cardio-vascular system is not human. Had he been she might have been able to save her patient. Her boss destroys the x-ray in the interests of the hospital and urges Grace to take some leave until things quieten down.Bruce, the paramedic who brought the Doctor in, settles down for a good night's sleep, but the Master's essence takes over his body. The following morning, the Master, in his temporary body, returns to the hospital to find a more suitable host body - the Doctor. By this time, though, the Doctor's body has disappeard and a strange man is wandering around the hospital. This man asks Grace for help - his memory is not clear but he knows her from somewhere. When the man pulls some medical equipment from his body Grace must confront the possibility that this man is the same one she was operating on the night before. A man who died but who now seems to have been reborn with a new face.
The Master has gained access to the Doctor's TARDIS but he cannot access its secrets. Chang Lee, carrying the Doctor's personal effects returns to the TARDIS where he encounters the Master. In exchange for wealth, Lee agrees to help the Master track down the Doctor in the belief that the TARDIS belongs to the Master. The Master uses Chang Lee to open the Eye of Harmony, unleashing energy which will gradually destroy the Earth. Midnight on 31 December 1999 will mark the end of the world!
THE UK VIDEO RELEASE
Released the week before the UK broadcast of the story, the VHS video release would be virtually the same as the television broadcast. The British version of the TV Movie had a number of edits made to it - most notably the scene when Chang Lee and his two friends are caught up in a gunfight. The original UK broadcast and video versions made little sense in this scene - the edit was made as it was felt it was too violent for British audiences - as one moment Lee and his two friends turn to face an armed gang, the next moment Lee is standing alone facing the armed gang only to be saved by the TARDIS materialising between him and the oncoming bullets! The other edit was when the Doctor was on the operating table - the old Doctor sits up and cries out before "dying". In the UK version, this was removed. The video release did not have the dedication to Jon Pertwee, tagged onto the broadcast version.
The run time of the UK VHS tape was 1:24:34, it was rated 12 by the British Board of Film Classification and, like the majority of video releases was a vanilla release ie no extras. Chronologically, it was the last story to be released on VHS, all subsequent broadcast adventures would be released in digital form.
