One of the most used ideas in Science Fiction is the small group of people, isolated in some remote place at the mercy of something nasty. Most of the time it works - and Horror of Fang Rock is a good example. The atmosphere builds up nicely; the characters work well; the story moves along at a satisfactory pace; the performances are very good; the direction is excellent; in all - a very good story, one of the series' best stories. If you enjoy stories such as The Thing, Alien, Aliens you might enjoy this slightly more lightweight version. It is interesting to note that it was an eleventh hour story - originally Terrance Dicks had written a vampire story but the heads of BBC drama felt that it would diminish the sister production of Dracula. Dicks wrote Horror of Fang Rock as a replacement for The Witch Lords (which he later re-wrote as State of Decay 3 years later). The story ranks as my favourite Terrance Dicks Doctor Who story. I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys a good story and doesn't care about special effects (on another note - how about a rematch with the Rutans in the new series?)
