I must admit to a little nostalgia about this story as it was the first pre-recorded tape I ever bought. The best thing about the DVD is finally seeing it in episodic format as it was only ever released as a feature length adventure previously. Its by no means one of the series' best stories. At the time I bought it there were no repeats and video releases had only just started (at the time I bought it a mere 8 adventures were available). In addition, I had only seen one other Troughton adventure (The Krotons, as part of The Five Faces of Doctor Who, shown in 1981). Here was the chance to see another and own it too!
This story has taken on interesting connotations recently - between public concerns about the enormous budget required for space missions and fuel crises. In June 2004, the central flight information system for the UK was knocked out for a time and all flights in and out of the UK were affected. Its easy to believe that T-Mat could be operated by one control centre.
At the end of the day The Seeds of Death is an enjoyable romp which includes such interesting moments as the Doctor running about mirrored corridors in the Moonbase (perhaps some descendant of Laurence Llewellyn Bowen designed the place?); the Doctor's capture by the Ice Warriors; the Doctor's weapon against the Ice Warriors (he seems to have little in the way of qualms about despatching the Martians in this story); and not forgetting another task for a foam-making machine. Good solid entertainment with a lot of humour thrown in for good measure.
