This is one of those stories that matures with time and viewing. I was not impressed when I first saw this story, on its initial video release in 1988. Later viewings allowed me to appreciate development of the story, pace and the characters. The atmosphere builds up quite nicely. Admittedly there are flaws - in episode four we hear of attacks on police stations etc but we never see them. The closest we get is the powerful scene of the Autons coming to life in shop windows and then emerging to kill first a policeman and then pedestrians waiting at a bus stop. The low budget ending is a tiny niggle in what is a fine story, but is easy to overlook in exchange for appreciating the intention of the scene. Jon Pertwee puts in some wonderful performances, which although comic are well handled. For example, the Doctor's arrival at UNIT's temporary HQ when he refuses to show his pass (not that he has one anyway) to the security guard (a cameo by the then producer, Derrick Sherwin); and when the Doctor introduces himself to Liz Shaw.
If you are not impressed on first viewing, take my advice and watch it a few more times over the years. The quiet subtley of the storytelling will win out eventually. If it doesn't then may I suggest you stick to Independence Day etc.
