The Doctor and Ace arrive in North Yorkshire during the Second World War. A small group of Russian soldiers have also arrived in the hope of getting their hands on the Ultima code machine. In addition to his research into code breaking with the Ultima Machine, Professor Judson is investigating Viking runes and artefacts. His interest is shared by Millington, commander of the barracks where a small group of British soldiers and the Ultima Machine are based.
As the story unfolds we learn that a lot of those visiting the village have their roots there and are connected by the ancient Viking curse that is beginning to make its presence felt. Something is lurking beneath the sea near the village and as the power of the Ultima Machine is applied to the Viking Runes, the Curse of Fenric is unleashed and the Doctor must battle against an ancient evil.
