The Doctor brings Ace to Gabriel Chase, a mansion in Perivale, towards the end of the 19th century. Ace is not too pleased to discover this, as she had told the Doctor about visiting the place in her own time - that something there frightened her. He has brought here to Gabriel Chase not only to confront her fear but to find the source of the evil that permeates the house.
The Doctor and Ace are not alone in the house. The Reverend Matthews has also come to Gabriel Chase, to confront the man who lives there - Josiah Smith. Josiah is reiterating Darwin's theory of evolution - a blasphemy which Matthews intends to discuss with Smith. Josiah's ward, Gwendoline, seems to take great delight in sending people to Coventry. Nimrod, the butler, seems very well evolved for a Neanderthal. A man is roaming the house in search of Redvers Fenn Cooper. A police inspector is locked away in a drawer along with a lot of other specimens of Earth life. Then there is the basement, where an alien ship is housed. A strange, pitiful creature hides in a locked room. All who live in the house have been touched by Light, but what is the Light?
