The TARDIS encounters a powerful force which causes it to land on Earth at the start of the 20th century. The Doctor and Sarah discover that a Professor Marcus Scarman was on an expedition to Egypt. There he made a discovery and sent various artefacts back home. However, his discovery has allowed a powerful, godlike being known as Sutekh, a degree of freedom. Trapped by a forcefield powered from a pyramid on Mars, Sutekh seeks full freedom and has taken over Marcus Scarman. Scarman returns to England to oversee the construction of a missile to be aimed at the Pyramid on Mars.
Knowing that Sutekh, when free, will destroy all life in his path, the Doctor and Sarah set out to stop him. If they fail, nothing in the universe will survive. To assist them in their battle they are aided by Laurence Scarman, but he finds it difficult to think of his brother Marcus as the receptacle of a powerful, evil being. Will his actions hinder the Doctor, leaving Sutekh with a clear path to freedom, or can they succeed in their battle against the ultimate evil?
