INTRODUCTION TO THE STORY

Out in the desert, a sandminer trundles across the sand, sometimes moving into the path of a storm. The human crew are there to make money - the miner collects precious minerals stirred up by desert storms. The menial tasks on board fall to the robots. There are 3 classes of robot: D (for Dum) - simple robots which cannot speak; V (for Voc) - more sophisticated robots which can speak; and SV (for Super-Voc) - basically the head robot. Every robot is programmed to serve humans and, with a nod to Asimov, they are unable to harm humans. So when a member of the human crew is murdered there can only be one of two suspects - another member of the human crew, or the two strangers found in one of the mineral hoppers - the Doctor and Leela.

From the evidence available, the Doctor concludes that the murderer was a robot, but who on board has the skill to reprogram a robot to do such a thing? Could it be Taren Capel, a man brought up by robots? Has he taken the plight of the robots to heart and is now on board the sandminer giving them the freedom to turn against their human masters? Who among the humans is really Taren Capel and can the Doctor stop him before they are all killed by the robots?
