SAPPHIRE AND STEEL
ASSIGNMENT FOUR

GENERAL INFORMATION

PICTURE/SOUND QUALITY

Although there is some video noise, the picture quality is generally acceptable. Its slightly better than the VHS release but does not really offer much incentive for anyone still reluctant to leave VHS behind.

The sound quality is reasonable. The soundtrack is in its original mono, but the main thing is that the both the score and the sound effects are very effective. The sounds accompanying the attempt to materialise the Shape on the stairs are especially chilling. Cyril Ornadel scores the incidental music for this story. I would be interested to know if he has scored any other series. His contribution to Sapphire and Steel cannot be overlooked.

In short - an acceptable transfer and soundtrack, but it could be better! Overall, I would rate the sound and picture quality at 75%

DVD EXTRAS

The extras are not only quite basic, they are fairly static. To put it simply, all you get are a series of transribed notes with the odd still (and some of those aren't relevant to the story). Overall, I would rate the extras at 25%.

INTRODUCTION TO THE STORY

Liz lives in a flat above a lost property shop. On the street outside children can be heard playing. These are no ordinary children - they all wear old fashioned clothes and look as if they have just stepped out of sepia-tinted photographs. Liz is getting ready to leave and go to her job when Sapphire and Steel arrive. They are interested in both the previous landlord and the new one. The previous landlord has disappeared and when asked, Liz is hard pressed to describe the new landlord. She even struggles to remember his face.

As their investigation proceeds, Sapphire and Steel discover that the previous landlord's fascination with photography and lenses to create interesting effects has allowed something, some entity - a Shape to enter our world. This Shape has the power to move through photographs, it can release images from photographs and make them real and it can trap people inside photographs. And it would seem a terrifying fate awaits anyone unfortunate enough to be trapped in a photograph. The Shape may prove to be the most terrifying foe Sapphire and Steel have encountered yet.
